AGARTALA: A traffic Assistant Sub-Inspector was allegedly dragged atop a car’s bonnet for a considerable distance after its driver attempted to flee the scene following an alleged hit-and-run incident in the capital’s Battala area on Thursday, triggering panic among locals.
According to police, the vehicle was intercepted by traffic personnel after allegedly hitting a pedestrian and attempting to escape. As officials moved to stop the car, the driver reportedly lifted ASI Biplab Dutta onto the bonnet and drove off recklessly from the spot.
Eyewitnesses said other traffic constables and local shopkeepers attempted to halt the vehicle, but the driver allegedly ignored all efforts and continued fleeing with the ASI clinging to the bonnet, creating a tense and chaotic scene in the area.
The driver reportedly threw ASI Dutta off the vehicle near the Pratapgarh Steel Bridge before escaping. The injured officer was rescued and provided necessary medical treatment.
Traffic police said the registration number of the vehicle involved has been identified, and a case has been registered at West Agartala Police Station. A search operation has been launched to trace and arrest the driver.
DSP (Traffic) Dulal Dutta confirmed that the vehicle was being intercepted over the pedestrian-hitting allegation when the incident occurred. He said investigation and operations to apprehend the accused are currently underway following registration of the case.
ASI Dutta’s current medical condition was not immediately available.
