Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has officially announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Australia next week, describing the India–Australia relationship as one of the most important partnerships shaping the Indo‑Pacific today. Modi will be in Melbourne from July 8 to 10, as part of a three‑nation tour that begins in Indonesia and concludes in New Zealand.
Albanese said he is looking forward to hosting Modi for the Annual Leaders’ Summit, noting that cooperation between the two countries has deepened across trade, defence, security and emerging technologies. “The Australia–India relationship has never been more consequential, and our partnership fosters peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo‑Pacific,” his office said.
The visit comes at a time when both nations are expanding their strategic footprint in the region. India, now the world’s fourth‑largest and fastest‑growing economy, has become a critical economic partner for Australia. The relationship is anchored in a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, supported by growing trade flows, defence exercises, education links and strong cultural ties driven by a large Indian diaspora.
The Indian High Commission in Canberra welcomed the announcement, saying the visit reflects the depth of the partnership and the shared commitment to a stable Indo‑Pacific. Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks in Melbourne and meet senior Australian officials to discuss cooperation in critical minerals, maritime security, clean energy, digital innovation and regional stability.
The visit also carries political weight. Australian media reported heightened security preparations after Modi received a death threat ahead of the trip, though officials say the probe is underway and the visit will proceed as planned.
Modi’s stop in Australia is expected to reinforce momentum in India–Australia ties, signalling a stronger strategic alignment at a time when the Indo‑Pacific faces growing geopolitical challenges.
