Japan Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s first official visit to India has resulted in one of the most substantial India–Japan partnership upgrades in recent years, producing $12.5 billion in fresh investments, 129 MoUs, and a wide-ranging cooperation roadmap across defence, technology, energy and economic security.
Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on 1 July, where she was received by Minister of State Jitendra Singh. The Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as a major step in strengthening the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. On 2 July, she was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, followed by delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House.
The two leaders unveiled a new economic security roadmap, aimed at securing supply chains, reducing dependence on China, and expanding cooperation in semiconductors, critical minerals, AI, high‑speed rail, and digital infrastructure. The summit also announced the first India–Japan military hardware co‑development project, marking a significant shift in defence collaboration.
A major highlight was Japan’s commitment to support India’s clean‑energy transition through a 1,000‑biogas‑plant initiative, alongside expanded cooperation in green hydrogen and renewable technologies. The visit also produced agreements to boost collaboration in emerging technologies, cybersecurity, and industrial innovation, reflecting shared priorities amid global supply‑chain disruptions.
At the India–Japan Joint Economic Forum, senior officials and industry leaders formalised many of the commercial announcements, signalling strong private‑sector confidence in the partnership.
The visit comes at a time when Asian economies are reassessing strategic alignments. For both New Delhi and Tokyo, the outcomes reinforce a long‑term vision of a free, open and stable Indo‑Pacific, supported by resilient economic ties and deeper strategic coordination.
