AGARTALA: CPI(M) veteran and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Thursday hit out at the state government on multiple fronts, ranging from healthcare policy to law and order, alleging administrative failures across departments.
Reacting to the government’s decision to close doctors’ private practice chambers at GBP Hospital, Sarkar alleged the move was taken without factoring in the ground reality of the state’s health services. He claimed patients are now facing hours-long waits at GBP and IGM Hospitals amid unrest among doctors, and said the decision requires urgent reconsideration in consultation with stakeholders.
On the reported resignation of an IAS officer allegedly following an altercation with a District Magistrate during a school visit, Sarkar alleged it reflected a serious abuse of power, claiming the officer’s irritation over students’ answers led to the disrespect of a senior woman officer. He connected the episode to the state’s ongoing teacher shortage, alleging that both education and health sectors were being deliberately disrupted.
Sarkar also alleged a complete breakdown of law and order, citing incidents of murder and theft occurring even near police stations, and accused the police of passing off such cases as suicides rather than investigating them properly.
