AGARTALA: Amtali Police, along with the West Tripura district administration, rescued an infant girl on Tuesday morning after her parents allegedly sold her to a man from Assam for a substantial sum of money.
The accused have been identified as Sajahan Mia, alias Saju Mia, a day labourer from Kanchanmala Muslim Para, and his wife. The couple, who have three daughters, had reportedly been battling severe financial hardship. According to police, the child was allegedly sold on Monday to a man from Bazaricherra Police Station area in Karimganj district, Assam, in exchange for money.
The matter came to light after local residents alerted the West Tripura District Magistrate, Childline, and police, prompting a rescue operation on Monday night. The child was recovered from the Assam-based individual on Tuesday morning and handed over to a Child Protection team, which took her into custody following due legal process.
Questioned by reporters, the child’s mother avoided directly addressing the allegation but admitted handing over the child due to financial distress.
The District Child Protection Officer confirmed an investigation has been launched, with further action to follow the Child Welfare Committee’s decision. The incident has caused widespread concern in Kanchanmala, with residents demanding strict legal action against the parents.
