EAST TILTHAI (Yuvarajnagar): Parents have raised serious concerns over the dilapidated condition of the Betangi Crèche Centre under the Social Welfare and Social Education Department, alleging that the facility meant to care for children of daily-wage families has become unsafe and hazardous.
According to parents, the building’s walls have developed cracks, the tin roof has large holes that let in rainwater, and the wooden roof beams have rotted, raising fears of collapse. They alleged the centre lacks adequate beds, a proper kitchen, functional toilets, electricity, and a boundary wall, leaving children exposed to extreme heat, rain, and reportedly snakes from the surrounding undergrowth.
A worker at the centre said around 25 children attend daily, cared for by only one worker and one helper. Parents further alleged that government-allocated food supplies for children largely fail to reach them, raising questions over distribution.
Children reportedly spend nearly 10 hours daily at the centre, prompting concerns over their physical and mental development given the conditions described.
Residents have demanded an immediate inspection, building repairs, electricity and water connections, sanitation upgrades, boundary construction, additional staff, and assured food supply as per official allocation.
