STATISTICS DAY: AGARTALA HONOURS MAHALANOBIS ON HIS 133RD BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

AGARTALA: The Directorate of Economics and Statistics observed the 20th Statistics Day on Monday at Pragya Bhawan here, marking the 133rd birth anniversary of eminent statistician Professor Prashanta Chandra Mahalanobis.

The programme was organised as part of statewide observances commemorating the contributions of Mahalanobis, widely regarded as the father of modern statistics in India, to the field of statistical science and its application in national planning and development.

Director of the department, Ratan Biswas, attended the event along with other officials and staff members of the Directorate.

The observance forms part of an annual tradition in which government departments across the country mark Statistics Day to recognise Mahalanobis’s pioneering work, including his contributions to large-scale sample surveys and the establishment of the Indian Statistical Institute.

Officials present at the Agartala event reiterated the importance of accurate statistical data in shaping policy and welfare schemes, in keeping with the spirit of the occasion.
