SHANTIR BAZAR: Serious allegations of unhygienic practices have surfaced against Apon Ice Cream Factory in Birchandra Manu, after worms and fungus were allegedly found in ice cream sold by the unit on Saturday, sparking outrage among local residents.
Customers who purchased ice cream from a vendor at Birchandra Manu Bazar reportedly found worms inside the product, with allegations that fungal growth was present across multiple units sold. Residents pointed out that the factory’s products are widely consumed across the area, including by schoolchildren, raising fears of potential health hazards.
When questioned on Sunday, a worker at the factory claimed the contamination may have resulted from a prolonged power outage, adding that no fresh ice cream had been produced in recent days and that older stock was currently being sold in the market. The worker further claimed the factory’s owners were aware of the worm infestation.
Despite earlier complaints against the factory, the Food Department of Shantir Bazar subdivision administration has allegedly taken no action. Residents alleged that several such ice cream units have mushroomed across the area without quality checks or hygiene compliance, and have demanded strict administrative intervention.
