Cough Syrup Concealed in Jeans Pockets: Two Held at Churaibari Border with 1,200 Bottles

CHURAIBARI (Assam border): Police intercepted a vehicle at the Churaibari border checkpoint and arrested two persons, including the driver, on charges of allegedly smuggling intoxicating cough syrup concealed in jeans pockets, officials said.

According to police, a routine check at the border post led to the seizure of 1,200 bottles of Escuf cough syrup, a substance commonly misused as an intoxicant, from the vehicle.

Officials said the consignment had allegedly been concealed inside the pockets of jeans trousers being transported in the vehicle, in an apparent attempt to evade detection during checking.

Both the driver and another occupant of the vehicle were taken into custody following the seizure. Police said further interrogation is underway to determine the source of the consignment, its intended destination, and whether a larger smuggling network is involved.

A case has reportedly been registered in connection with the seizure, and legal proceedings are expected to follow.

The Churaibari border, a key entry point between Assam and Tripura, has frequently been used for smuggling banned and intoxicating substances, prompting authorities to maintain heightened vigilance at checkpoints in the area.
