Allegations of RTI Activist Being Framed; Sudip Roy Barman Stands by Family

Allegations that RTI activist Prasenjit Saha of Melaghar was framed in a ganja (cannabis) case have added a new dimension in political circles. Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman has now extended his support to the activist’s family. On Sunday, he visited Prasenjit Saha’s residence at Thakurpara in Melaghar and met with family members. He spoke with them at length, enquired about their well-being, and urged them to remain patient and continue the fight during this difficult time.

It may be recalled that RTI activist Prasenjit Saha was arrested a few days ago on charges of possessing ganja in his vehicle. He is currently in judicial custody. However, from the very beginning, Prasenjit and his family have claimed that he was deliberately implicated in a false case.

Present with Sudip Roy Barman on the occasion were Congress leaders Nilkamal Saha, Habil Mia, Deepak Chakraborty, Lakshman Das, and other party workers. After meeting with the family, he alleged that Prasenjit Saha had been targeted specifically because he had been vocal against corruption and had filed RTI applications on various issues.

Sudip Roy Barman said, “We believe Prasenjit Saha has been framed for politically motivated reasons. He used to raise questions about various irregularities and corruption through the Right to Information Act. That is why he has been implicated in this case through a conspiracy. We demand a fair investigation into this incident and will stand by his family in their legal fight.”

The Congress leader’s assurance has brought some relief to Prasenjit Saha’s family. A section of local residents has also demanded a fair investigation into the matter.

All eyes are now on the next course of action in the court. It remains to be seen whether the truth comes to light through the legal process and how the allegations against Prasenjit Saha are ultimately resolved.
