Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued one of her strongest public rebukes yet to US President Donald Trump, dismissing his repeated claims that she “begged” him for photographs at the recent G7 Summit in France. Calling the remarks “senseless, unprovoked and completely false,” Meloni said she would respond once but refused to prolong what she described as an unnecessary spectacle between allies.
The dispute began after Trump posted on Truth Social alleging that Meloni had sought multiple photo opportunities with him and suggesting her popularity in Italy was declining because of her positions on US policy. Meloni responded directly on Instagram, saying she would not allow the issue to distract from the responsibilities of Western leadership. “I still believe in the unity of the West, and I do not believe this is a spectacle worthy of our task,” she wrote.
Meloni also rejected Trump’s suggestion that her political standing had weakened, insisting that her approval depends solely on her ability to defend Italy’s national interest. “Being your friend certainly has not helped it,” she said pointedly. She added that Italy’s agreements on US military bases remain governed by formal arrangements that have always been respected, countering Trump’s criticism of alleged restrictions on American use of Italian airbases.
In a sharper line, Meloni told Trump to refrain from commenting on her domestic popularity. “My popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours,” she said.
Trump later repeated his claims, accusing Meloni of distancing herself from Washington on issues including Iran and military cooperation. The exchange has sparked renewed debate in Italy about the country’s relationship with the United States and the tone of transatlantic diplomacy.
