Agartala: The Tripura High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to five individuals accused in connection with the alleged abetment of suicide of BJP leader Rahul Kishore Roy.
Rahul Kishore Roy, a prominent Yuva BJP leader from Dharmanagar, was found dead at his residence on April 4. Allegations subsequently emerged that he had been subjected to mental harassment by certain party colleagues, which allegedly drove him to take the extreme step. The incident occurred shortly after the BJP’s decisive victory in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election.
Following a complaint lodged by Roy’s wife, Ananya Bhattacharjee, police registered a case against seven persons under relevant provisions of law. During the course of the investigation, one accused was arrested, while the remaining accused were reported to have remained absconding.
Five of the accused—Manoj Purkayastha, Prabal Kanti Dey, Hirak Jyoti Nath, Saroj Deb, and Abhijit Das—had initially approached a local court seeking anticipatory bail. Their plea was rejected.
Subsequently, they moved the Tripura High Court. The matter was heard by Justice Biswajit Palit on June 11, who granted anticipatory bail to all five accused, subject to conditions imposed by the court.
Police officials have stated that the investigation into the alleged suicide abetment case is continuing, and further legal proceedings will be conducted in accordance with the findings of the investigation.
