Agartala: CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Saturday demanded the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of a sitting judge to investigate the death of a 24-year-old woman employee of Tripura Shantiniketan Medical College. He also urged the state government to extend all possible assistance to the bereaved family.
Chaudhury, accompanied by CPI(M) Dukli Subdivision Secretary Samar Chakraborty and CPI(M) State Committee Member and DYFI State Secretary Nabarun Deb, visited the victim’s family to express condolences and gather information about the incident.
Addressing the media after the visit, Chaudhury questioned the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, stating that the incident did not appear to be a normal case. He said the deceased had been working at the girls’ hostel of the medical college for nearly two years after completing her BBM studies.
Referring to the family’s allegations, Chaudhury claimed that the woman was allegedly made to work beyond official duty hours and was threatened with termination if she refused. He also cited the family’s concerns regarding the condition of the room, the position of the body, the ceiling fan, and other physical evidence, arguing that these raised serious questions about the nature of the incident.
The CPI(M) leader criticised the police investigation and questioned the conclusion that it was a case of suicide. He alleged that there were inconsistencies in the investigation and demanded a criminal investigation monitored by an SIT under the supervision of a sitting judge. He further said that a judicial magistrate, rather than a civil magistrate, should oversee the inquiry to ensure transparency and public confidence.
Chaudhury also questioned why no representative from Tripura Shantiniketan Medical College had visited the victim’s family after the incident.
The family has also sought a thorough investigation into the case. Police have registered a case and arrested one person in connection with the matter. The accused has been produced before a court, and police have sought custody for further investigation.
During the media interaction, Chaudhury also commented on the recent Tripura Bar Association election, criticised remarks made by minister Ratan Lal Nath, and alleged deterioration in the state’s law and order situation. He accused the ruling BJP of attempting to divert attention by referring to incidents in West Bengal instead of addressing issues within Tripura.
The police and the medical college authorities have not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations made by the CPI(M) leaders.
